KL Son Project

Classes Son Cubano

The KL Son Project is the only independent dance performance team in South East Asia that specializes in the unique dance genre of Son Cubano. Son Cubano is the primary foundation of salsa and Latin contemporary music today. It is a traditional style of music and dance that originated from one of Cuba’s provinces, which became popular among Cubans in the 1930s. Established in early 2015, the KL Son Project is the brainchild of three friends: Zam “El-Gallito” (Choreographer), Nefey Jay, and DJ Selva. Zam is the leading figure in traditional Son Cubano in Malaysia.

His distinct style which showcases the traditional Cuban flavour of Son coupled with his exquisite balance and dexterity makes him a one-of-a-kind son dancer. Nefey has been in the salsa scene for several years and in 2010 decided to learn Son Cubano. DJ Selva is one of the premier salsa DJs in Malaysia who is known for his acquired taste for Cuban music of all types. Offering different values and contributions from one another, the three of them have effectively collaborated to form a team based on their common love and passion for Son Cubano. The KL Son Project was formed with the sole objective of promoting Son Cubano by increasing the awareness of this traditional form of Cuban music and dance. Still in its infancy, the group is already making headway by performing at various local and international events.

Their maiden performance at a dance festival was at the Penang Salsa Fiesta (PSF) 2015, and closely followed in July 2015 at Afro Latin Invasion (ALIA) 2015. They performed and conducted workshops at the Singapore-Malaysia (MY-SG) Dance Fiesta and Osaka Latin Dance Festival 2015 (OLDF) as well as at the World Bachata Festival 2015 (WBF) and Manila Boracay Latin Dance Festival 2015.
